After having posted a notice in Neverwinter looking for guards to escort his mining supply wagon to the nearby frontier-town of Phandalin. He and his bodyguard Sildar Hallwinter rode ahead on horseback, on 1489DR, Tarsakh 17, and were ambushed by goblins along the Triboar Trail.
Following the trail of Gundren and his captors, Sildar was found and rescued, but Gundren and his map showing the location of the lost mines of Phandelver’s Pact he and his brothers found, had been taken away to Cragmaw Castle.
On 1489DR, Tarsakh 30, gundren was found beaten, tortured, and starved by Sildar Hallwinter and a group of adventurers he hired to assault the castle. While in captivity, Gundren learned that The Black Spider had already found the entrance to the lost mines, also known as Wave Echo Cave. He had captured Gundren and his map, to prevent anyone else from learning about it’s location.
He offered 10% of the mines future profits to the “Heroes of Phandalin” if they agreed to help him find his brothers, and take back the mines.
